Cinegear Expo Film Festival lands on Phones, Tablets, Connected TVs and Computers with help from Stream-In Cinema and Nagra’s GO Live Platform
November 15, 2020, Hollywood, CA: Like so many events affected by the global pandemic, Cinegear Expo opted to move its extremely popular event online. Much of the educational programming usually presented at the Expo has been transformed into a series of Zoom events. But when it was time to move their Cinegear Expo Film Festival online, Cinegear turned to long-time collaborator Brian Quandt, CTO of a new venture known as Stream-In Cinema.
“This is a lot more than a watch party,” said Cinegear Expo Co-Founder Juliane Grosso. “We knew we had great quality content that deserved to be seen in high quality on screens large and small. So, we turned to Brian Quandt to bring that reality to life.”
For Cinegear Expo’s Film Festival, Brian Quandt and Stream-in Cinema utilized a variety of technologies. Quandt used AutoDCP’s cloud-based encoding system to prepare both DCP and OTT-compatible versions of the festival content. Then Quandt turned to Nagra and their GO Live platform to quickly spin up a white-labeled OTT system for delivery to an engaging app on the Apple Store and Google Play Store.
“The GO Live platform allowed us to spin up a customized playback solution very quickly,” said Quandt. “We were able to provide playback for iOS, AppleTV, and Airplay, Android and Chromecast as well as desktop players. Our encoders delivered great quality and with the help of Nagrai, we knew we could deliver to a lot of playback systems while keeping the content absolutely safe and secure.
By all accounts, the Festival was a rousing success. Over 300 participants tuned in for the festival as well as the Festival Afterparty featuring trivia contests, two signature cocktails and deserving winners selected from the high-caliber films in the festival.
Festival Co-Founder Karl Kresser remarked at how easy it was to create a virtual film festival with the help of Stream-in Cinema. “So much of the process was automated for us,” said Kresser. “Festival participants simply dropped their original content in the app, and we had a convenient dashboard that allowed us to see when the content was successfully delivered. So, we could tell at a glance exactly where we were in the submissions process. It was so streamlined and simple.”
